Social Studies Lesson on The History of Christmas
December 1st, 2022
3rd grade
Component: Historical Awareness of a National Holiday
Objective: Students should understand events and individual ideas that have influenced the history. Students should be able to discuss why it is important and how today would be different without it. This will help the students develop cognitive and social skills. Students should be able to discuss and understand the true meaning of Christmas.
Competency: Students should participate in activity-group based discussions about what they did and did not know about the true meaning behind Christmas. Students will ask questions about what they did not know and also share what they thought was interesting.
Plan: Show students a cartoon history video on The History of Christmas. Then have students get into their groups to discuss and share with the class something they found interesting from the video. Then I will show a Christmas craft video and they have the option out of 4 different crafts to pick from to do with their groups then show them to the class.
Assessment: An exit ticket will be given at the end. Students should describe in their own words what they had learned from today’s lesson and what they found the most interesting about the History of Christmas video.
